Essential lighting
To kick start the year and to brighten these short and dark days, we have put together a list of essential lights.
Pendants
Nuura's Apiales 18 is a real statement, whether it's the centerpiece for a foyer or the focal point in a large living room or even over a dining table. The collection is inspired by flowers and consists of two chandeliers with 9 or 18 mouth-blown globes, available in brush brass or in satin black.
Another statement pendant is Heat by Northern. The intention is for the pendant to appear fiery one minute then serene the next, creating an eye-catching design whether the light is switched on or off. We were really excited that these pendants were centre stage at Heal's Festival of Light display at the end of last year.
The next pendant is more subtle than the previous two but is still impressive. Luna by Design House Stockholm, is entirely made of glass, even the lid, making the light look like a full moon once switched on. This pendant comes in a number of sizes and either in clear or opaque glass.
Floor Lamps
Le Klint launched their new Pliverre Floor Lamp last November. This is a really elegant light with a black base and white opal glass and brass details and can be moved to direct the light where it needs to go.
The next floor light is part of the Blossi collection by Nuura Lighting. A specially developed LED disc is placed so the light reflects in the mouth-blown glass shade and the golden finished metal which spreads a soft and sophisticated indirect light.
Snowball by Northern is a modern take on the classic Bauhaus lamp. The lamp's metal stem is anchored to a streamlined rectangular base which balances the frosted glass lampshade above. The Snowball is available as a floor lamp or a table lamp and it's minimalistic design suits a wide range of interiors
Wall lights
The Butterfly wall light by Northern dates back to 1964, and was later introduced by Northern in 2008. The Butterfly is one of those pieces that is at home in both a contemporary setting or a more traditional, historical building. Infact, the Butterfly wall light was recently featured in Cole's and Son's promotional campaign for their Great Master's collection. The light comes in a number of colourways and can either be solid or perforated.
The Liila light by Nuura is one of our favourite pieces here at Hyphen mainly for its simplicity of a thin round sheet of metal and a unique, mouth blown glass but also because it's really flexible. It can be used as a wall light or a ceiling light and because of its simplicity, it suits smaller rooms. However if a number of Liila wall lights are put together, they make quite a display.
The award winning Mutatio by Le Klint is a minimal and contemporary design. It's clean lines and clear function make it the perfect fit for both residential and commercial projects. The Mutatio is also available as a table lamp.
Table lights
In 2013, Northern decided to re-launch this classic design, the Birdy, taking care to preserve the original shape and highly functional features that at first made it such a well-loved light. The lamp series is available in white, grey or black with steel finish and black colored shade with black or brass metal finish.
The Ombre, again by Northern consists of a compact base and an adjustable shade. The base and shade are made in steel and seamlessly powdercoated in matt black or beige. We really like that it can be used as a desk light, useful for when working or the shade can be directed to offer more ambient lighting.
The Carronade designed by Markus Johansson for Le Klint is inspired by 17th century ship cannons. The distinctive cannon shaped table light rests on a smooth American walnut base and has a small brass disc on either side. Available in black or sand, the collection also includes a pendant and floor lamp.
